What Are the Benefits of a Warm Mist Humidifier?

For many homes, the primary benefit of owning a warm mist humidifier is a contaminant-free water vapor that is added to the indoor environment. Because the water vapor is created by using electrodes or heating elements to boil water from a tank reserve, there aren’t any bacteria or mold contained within the mist that is produced. This helps to reduce many common allergens, such as pet dander and pollen that may be causing uncomfortable symptoms.

There are also these additional benefits to consider if you’re shopping for the best warm mist humidifier today.

  • A decrease in ear, nose, and throat inflammation symptoms. Heated water vapor, when inhaled, can help to reduce bothersome inflammation. It also has a number of additional health benefits that come with regular use.
  • It helps save money on heating costs. With the combination of improved humidity and heated water vapor, you can often improve the feeling of warmth inside a room without having to adjust your thermostat.
  • They are available in personal sizes. One of the most unique warm mist humidifiers is the vaporizer. These may come with form-fitting facial units that allow you to directly inhale the water vapor created to maximize the health benefits this technology can provide.

Sometimes you’ll even find hybrid humidifiers available with warm mist and cool mist options. These are a great investment when you want to have both options available to you, but only wish to purchase one humidifier.

What Are Some Common Issues with Warm Mist Humidifiers?

Even the best warm humidifier can be potentially harmful if it is used incorrectly. This is because of the heating elements or electrodes that are contained within the unit. If you accidentally knock the humidifier over while it is operating, the heating elements may become exposed while they are active and this offers the potential of a burn. Homes with pets or young children are usually encouraged to purchase one of the best cool mist humidifiers instead.

Warm mist humidifiers also hit your power bill a little harder than other humidifiers typically do. This is because of the energy requirements necessary to bring water to a boiling temperature. Although the cost difference is only a few dollars every month, it does add up when you look at the yearly operation costs of these humidifiers.

There’s also the issue of the temperature of the mist that comes out of the humidifiers. Although the water is under boiling temperature as it is expelled, this doesn’t mean it feels good if a body part is exposed to that water vapor. Think about how it feels to hold your hand over a pot of boiling water on the stove-top and the experience is about the same.

How to Find the Best Warm Mist Humidifier for Me

The warm mist humidifier reviews you’ll find here and on public websites can really help you to discover the right make and model for your home. Most warm mist humidifiers are essentially the same, but may offer more tank capacity than others. You might also discover features like these may be available for some models through those reviews.

  • Automatic timers. This would allow you to operate your humidifier for a specific period of time and then have it shut-off on its own.
  • Humidistat. This digital feature allows you to see what the current humidity levels happen to be in your room.
  • Auto shut-off. This might be the best feature of them all. If your humidifier gets knocked over for any reason, the auto shut-off causes the heating elements to disengage to lessen the risk of an injury.

Capacity and length of running time are additional issues that must be considered with the warm mist humidifier. Many models will operate for 6-8 hours with a 1-1.5 gallon tank, but some vaporizers may only offer 1-2 hours of humidity support. Other models may have a larger tank, but expel water quickly and require more water after just 4 hours of use. Others may use less than 1 gallon of water, but run for 48 hours or more.

What Are the Prices of the Best Warm Mist Humidifiers Today?

Warm mist humidifiers are typically one of the higher priced options to improve humidity levels within a home. This is because of heating components that are included with the unit. Entry-level models are typically priced above $50 in this category, with several models coming close to $100. Adding some features to the best warm humidifier may push that price above $150. Whole home solutions may be between $250-$350.

What Do Our Reviews Have to Say?

Ivation

This warm mist humidifier offers you an ultrasonic experience with a switchable heat function so you can have an ultimate level of customization. Settings for mist flow are a standard 3-level option with low, medium, and high choices. The lowest setting will give you over 2 days of continuous mist. An ion exchange filter does need replacement from time to time, but does a good job of giving you a pure humidity supply. An included timer also gives you up to 12 hours of presets so you can run the humidifier as you need. It’s easily one of the best warm mist humidifiers in this category.

Honeywell

Considering the price of this warm mist humidifier, our expectations for it were rather low. With two basic settings and a standard design, we figured it would provide a fairly standard experience. We were wrong. On the lower setting, we got over a day’s worth of continuous use out of this model. It improved humidity levels in a large master bedroom just as well as it did in a smaller room. The tank does need some regular maintenance to keep it clean, but that’s really the only issue we had with this particular model. It does a great job at a great price.

Holmes

The issue that so many warm mist humidifiers have lies within their design. A large tank often accompanies a small dispersal mechanism, which makes it easy to expose the heating elements. We didn’t have that issue at all with this particular model. It works best for smaller rooms and holds 2.3 gallons of water, but in return you get up to 1 full day of use with every tank fill. There are two misting speeds from which to choose and the top output offers a reasonably good dispersal rate. It performed well for us and we think it will do the same for you.

Vicks

This manufacturer has often worked to innovate the warm mist humidifier to make it more beneficial to user health. The top tray in the humidifier dispersal area, for example, could hold Vapo-rub so you can clear out your sinuses effectively. New pads can be inserted into some models. Two comfort settings are included with this model and it has a medicine cup for inhalants so you can get a medicated vapor for certain health conditions. It runs for about 12 hours on a tank and there’s a soft light for nighttime use. It’s affordable, it works consistently, and it’s easy to maintain – all positives for us.

Air-O-Swiss

This warm mist humidifier is a beast. It can provide humidification benefits in rooms up to 600 square feet in size. The surface touch controls are very modern and easy to use. Timer presets are available for up to 8 hours or you can run this humidifier continuously if you prefer. It also offers intelligent temperature technologies so that humidity levels can pair with current room temperatures for the most comfortable experience possible. It also offers a sleep mode so you can have added comfort at night. With all of these features, this humidifier earns our strongest recommendation.

How warm do those ultrasonic mists become? There is nothing specified, and comments on other sites do not cover such a question, either. Although user comments have made statements like ‘not much warmer than ambient temps’ or the like.
The Vicks unit operates a boiling-level heat, although mist is not boiling hot when it is leaving the humidifier. That heated humidity is important in our winter climate. I am hoping you can give some idea of the relative warmth factor regarding those units you have reviewed, here.
    Thank you very much.

This is an extract from the BONECO Warm or Cool Mist Ultrasonic Humidifier 7147 manual:

“As a result, the water is pre-heated to a temperature of 176°F (80 °C) before entering the nebulizer space. It takes approx. 10 to 15 minutes for the water in the base to warm up. The mist now leaves the humidifier at a pleasant temperature of 104°F (40 °C). The advantage of this is that the room temperature does not drop and, in addition, it significantly improves the water quality maintenance.”

So, to answer your question – ultrasonic humidifiers with a warm mist function, will only have a mist slightly warmer than ambient temperatures, at 104°F (40 °C). For other humidifiers like the Vicks that operate at boiling temperature, there should theoretically be higher temperatures of mist achieved. However they also include cooling chambers as manufacturers don’t really like to have problems caused by steam scalded children on their hands. The boiling water will produce steam (which is actually invisible) at 212°F, the steam then hits the cooling chamber and cools to water vapor (which is visible) and finally leaves the unit.

If heated humidity is very important to your choice, I’d go with a unit that actually boils the water rather than simply warming the water up before dispensing. Or, you may need to combine a cool mist humidifier with another heating source, such as an oil heater if you have a bigger space and are conscious of the energy bill.
